Entergy is committed to provide you with safe, reliable power. To do that, we must maintain the vegetation that occurs near our lines. Since trees and limbs account for many of our service interruptions, especially during storms, cutting trees back and maintaining limbs and brush away from the power lines and other equipment prevents outages and service interruptions.

Identifying power lines
Electricity flows from power plants to step up transformers at substations, then through transmission lines. These lines carry high voltage, usually across long distances. Transmission lines are taller (60-80 feet) and have larger rights-of-way. They flow power to substations, where the voltages are lowered, then fed to distribution lines. Distribution lines are smaller (30-45 feet) and have narrower rights-of-way. These are most commonly seen along streets, feeding homes and businesses.
Frequently asked questions
Why are they trimming my trees?
Trees and power lines are not compatible. When they make contact, it can cause outages and damage vegetation. Trimming is necessary to prevent outages, maintain safety and protect surrounding vegetation.
What will my trees look like?
Trees are trimmed back far enough to keep them from growing into the line. Often, we use directional pruning to encourage the tree to grow away from power lines and equipment. See more about our trimming practices here. In order to keep rates reasonable for our customers, we trim only to maintain reliable service and safety. This is not the same as trimming for landscape maintenance purposes.
Will they notify me before they trim?
There are instances when a tree must be trimmed or removed without prior notification. Entergy is not required to notify customers to access or maintain company-owned facilities. As a courtesy, Entergy will attempt to notify customers prior to routine cycle trimming by the following means:
- Approximately two weeks prior: a customer will receive an automated call prior to cycle trimming work on the distribution system.
- One to two days prior: a door hanger will be left at each residence where work is to be performed.
- Day of work: a knock on the door for awareness.
If trimming occurs in a rural area or an area without houses in the immediate area, this notification process will not occur.
Will Entergy clean the brush/debris?
We do not pick up debris from storm damage, customer requested trims/removals, or hazard trees removed inside or outside of the right-of-way. For routine cycle trimming, the brush/debris generated from the trimming will be chipped, mowed or mulched if it is located within landscaped and/or maintained areas as the work is completed. Brush/debris generated from trimming work located in unmaintained areas will be left on-site (as is) to decompose naturally.
The timeline for debris removal/mulching/mowing may vary depending on the location. In residential neighborhoods/yards it is our goal to do this on the same day as the trimming work. If not, the contractor is expected to notify the customer (in person or via door hanger) that they will return the following day to complete the cleanup. In rural, maintained areas the debris removal/mowing/mulching from mechanical trimming may take longer and will be completed following the work.
What happens when I report a vegetation concern?
A ticket is created for the concern to be inspected. This ticket has a 10-working-day commitment, which means someone will inspect it within 10 working days.
- If the concern does not require trimming, you will be contacted via phone call or door hanger.
- If the concern needs to be trimmed and it is something a service worker can handle within 30 minutes, they will do so. If the work will take longer than 30 minutes, the ticket will be referred to our vegetation department.
