Grand Gulf: 40 years of producing clean, reliable power

In July 1985, Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Port Gibson, Miss., made history by becoming the first and only nuclear power plant to produce electricity in Mississippi.

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station is the largest single-unit reactor in the United States. It produces roughly 1,450 megawatts of clean energy. That equates to powering roughly 850,000 homes 24/7/365.

Today as always, one of Entergy’s core values is a commitment to the community. Grand Gulf and its employees maintain a strong presence in the communities they serve by spending more than $9 million with local companies, and through charitable contributions and donations that promote community development, education and the environment. With an annual payroll of approximately $75 million, Grand Gulf pays approximately $30 million in state and local taxes each year. Providing access to economical, clean energy has kept customers’ rates among the lowest in the nation.

Nuclear 101 facts

Nuclear fuel is small but mighty.

One uranium fuel pellet is about the same size as a gummy bear. One pellet creates as much energy as one ton of coal, or 149 gallons of oil, or 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas.

Nuclear is clean.

It protects our air quality by generating electricity without harmful pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter or mercury.

Nuclear is reliable.

Nuclear plants are an efficient source of electricity, operating around the clock at a 92% capacity factor. Not to mention, nuclear plants are built to withstand the toughest of circumstances.
