With extreme heat impacting Arkansas, we’re taking steps to help keep our customers safe and comfortable. Disconnects are suspended through Friday, Aug. 21 and will resume beginning Monday, Aug. 24.
In the meantime, here are a few ways to stay safe and manage energy use during extreme heat:
Stay safe in the heat
Whether you’re working outdoors, doing yardwork or tackling home projects, remember to:
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
- Take regular breaks in a cool or shaded area.
- Schedule strenuous outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day when possible.
- Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, including extreme weakness, fatigue, nausea, headache and heavy sweating.
- Heat stroke can be life-threatening. If someone experiences confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures or hot, dry skin, move them to a cool area and seek immediate medical assistance.
Simple ways to save energy
Cooling your home can account for a significant portion of your electric bill during the summer. A few low- or no-cost changes can help:
- Set your thermostat to the highest temperature that’s comfortable.
- Change or clean your air-conditioning filter regularly.
- Use ceiling or portable fans to circulate cool air, and turn fans off when rooms are unoccupied.
- Close blinds, shades and curtains during the hottest parts of the day.
- Seal gaps around doors, windows and ductwork to keep cool air inside.
