Entergy Arkansas is helping power more than just homes and businesses, it’s helping power the future of young women across South Arkansas through its continued partnership with the Girls Learning About Math and Science (GLAMS) program.
Since 2018, Entergy Arkansas has played a vital role in supporting GLAMS, a one-day conference that introduces sixth-grade girls to opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The program, which serves more than 200 students annually from multiple school districts in the region, is made possible through strong community partnerships, dedicated volunteers and critical grant funding.
This year’s event was no exception. Nearly 200 girls gathered to explore STEM in a hands-on, engaging environment. Entergy employees were at the center of that experience, sharing their expertise through mentoring and bringing real-world applications of math and science to life through demonstrations.
One highlight of the day included a simulation led by Entergy team members showing how electricity is generated and delivered to homes and businesses. Students then put their knowledge into action by building their own simple electric motors using batteries, magnets and wire, turning abstract concepts into tangible learning.
Beyond the classroom-style sessions, Entergy’s involvement runs deep. Team members volunteered across multiple roles, from staffing check-in tables to leading breakout sessions on topics like economic development and innovative industries in Arkansas. The company also contributed $3,000 in grant funding to support the event, funding that is essential to keeping the program accessible and impactful.
“GLAMS is about opening doors and showing these young women what’s possible,” said Chris Wasson, region manager customer service. Wasson has served on the GLAMS executive planning committee since the partnership began.
“At Entergy Arkansas, we’re proud to invest our time, resources and people into programs like this because we know these students are the future of our workforce, our communities and our state,” he said.
The impact of GLAMS is evident in the voices of the students themselves. In survey responses, participants described the experience as “amazing,” “empowering,” and a reminder to “never give up.” For many, it’s their first exposure to careers in STEM and a chance to see themselves in those roles.
The program itself is a true community effort, led in partnership with organizations like South Arkansas College, local school districts and community foundations. With more than 100 volunteers supporting the event each year, GLAMS continues to grow as a powerful platform for inspiration and opportunity.
Through its ongoing support of GLAMS, Entergy Arkansas is demonstrating its commitment to building stronger communities by investing in education, workforce development and the next generation of leaders. It’s a partnership that not only sparks curiosity but helps ensure that Arkansas’s future is brighter, more inclusive and full of possibility.
