As Waterford 3 nuclear power plant marks 40 years of commercial operations, the station’s central programs engineering supervisor, Kyle Sanford, reflects on the profound sense of purpose that drew him to the facility in the first place.

Kyle Sanford’s career at Waterford 3 has been marked by a diverse range of roles and responsibilities. Starting as an electrical design engineer in 2013, Sanford has since held positions in systems engineering and maintenance rule coordination and as an instructor. In his current role as the central programs engineering supervisor, Sanford is responsible for overseeing the implementation and performance of the plant’s critical engineering programs and ensuring personnel are properly trained and qualified.

“This has allowed me to develop a well-rounded skill set and multifaceted perspective that has uniquely positioned me to take on a supervisory position in central engineering programs,” Sanford explained. “These varied experiences have equipped me with the ability to offer innovative solutions, challenge existing norms and reinforce critical standards as I oversee engineering activities across the nuclear fleet.”

What originally drew Sanford to Waterford 3 was the importance of the work. “As an engineer, I’ve always been passionate about using my technical skills to make a real difference,” he shared. “And at Waterford 3, I recognized that the work we do is essential – not just to the company, but to the entire community that depends on the safe and reliable power we generate.”

Sanford takes great pride in providing the clean, essential energy that powers thousands of homes and businesses in the region. “Whenever I see the Waterford 3 plant on the horizon, I’m reminded of the profound responsibility we have to our neighbors,” he said. “It’s that sense of purpose that drives me to continuously improve, innovate and uphold the highest standards in my role.”

Beyond the critical nature of the work, Sanford has also been deeply inspired by the exceptional people that make up the Waterford 3 team. “The nuclear workforce is truly exceptional, filled with dedicated professionals who share a steadfast commitment to excellence and safety,” he explained. “I’m inspired daily by the passion and camaraderie of my colleagues, who approach every task with the utmost care and diligence.”

Sanford is proud to be a part of the “Waterford 3 family” and the positive impact the plant has on the local community. “Waterford 3’s role as a reliable, responsible corporate citizen is deeply valued and integral to the well-being of the region it serves,” he said.
