Maintaining a Flexible and Effective Mutual Assistance System (EEI Electric Perspectives)

Mutual assistance, a hallmark of the electric power industry, has characterized successful responses to major incidents and disasters for decades. It draws on voluntary partnerships that allow impacted electric companies to access specialized equipment and skilled workers from unaffected companies to restore power safely and quickly. It is essential to restoration planning and is used regularly by investor-owned electric companies, public power utilities, and electric cooperatives across the nation.

Entergy Earns EEI Emergency Assistance Award and Emergency Recovery Award

The Edison Electric Institute today presented Entergy Corporation with the association's "Emergency Assistance Award" after a severe windstorm impacted Dallas in June. Entergy’s Commitment to Helping Our Neighbors

Ever seen a caravan of linemen with bucket trucks heading towards a disaster site, in the opposite direction that everyone else is driving? It’s not because they’re lost or searching for an adrenaline rush. It’s because they’re part of a program that helps electric companies turn the lights on more quickly after a natural disaster. In preparation for emergencies, electric companies have mutual assistance agreements with other companies that allow them to increase their workforce by “borrowing” restoration workers to help respond to areas impacted by a major outage event.

Recognizing Entergy employees’ expertise in restoring power to those affected by major outages, the Edison Electric Institute today awarded two emergency response awards to the company. Entergy received EEI’s Emergency Recovery Award to recognize outstanding power restoration efforts on behalf of its customers and the Emergency Assistance Award for helping other utility companies recover from devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew.
