Roland Mays is a chemistry specialist who has worked at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Port Gibson, Mississippi, for 10 years. As part of his job, he oversees programs that maximize corrosion protection and maintain core reactor chemistry for asset preservation to keep the public and environment safe.
As part of Power Plant Worker Appreciation Day, Mays discussed what he liked most about working at Entergy.
“I love that we power life,” said Mays. “It brings me great pride to tell my kids that I help make electricity every day and we send it out to the grid.”
Mays went on to talk about how he loved his job and working in the chemistry department.
“We are so tight-knit and family oriented,” he said. “We have the best department on site, I think. Everyone is always willing to jump in and help find solutions whenever problems arise. “Not only is everyone so close, but it’s a continuous learning environment. It really is a great place to work.”
Mays also takes pride in being a loving husband and girl dad. He has three beautiful daughters and recently added a new puppy to the family, Murphy Lee.
“I love the opportunities Entergy affords me and my family,” he said. “Entergy cares about its employees and I really believe they hire you to retire you.”
Mays is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., whose motto is “Achievement In Every Field of Human Endeavor.” Mays said he lives by this motto. It helps him not only rise to be a natural leader but encourages him and other Grand Gulf brothers of the fraternity to be the best they can be at any task assigned to them.
“I truly believe in taking ownership of my work,” said Mays. “I’ve always been a leader, and I believe in driving my work to completion safely.”
A fun fact about Mays is that he shares a birthday with Grand Gulf Nuclear Station. He was born in July 1985, which is the same month and year Grand Gulf Nuclear Station went into commercial operation.
