The American Association of Blacks in Energy recently held its 49th national conference in New Orleans, bringing together hundreds of professionals from across the country to engage in meaningful discussions on some of the industry’s most pressing topics – from grid modernization and artificial intelligence to workforce development and the evolving expectations of the customers served. The collaboration across utilities, regulators, and innovators underscored the importance of staying connected and forward-focused in a rapidly changing environment.

Leadership from the Arkansas chapter reinforced that message. Jarrod Harris, chapter president and customer account manager at Entergy Arkansas, highlighted that AABE plays a critical role in strengthening both the industry and its people by fostering collaboration and creating opportunities for shared learning across the energy sector. These connections help ensure organizations remain innovative, competitive, and prepared for the future.

Marshunda Jones, chapter secretary and customer service manager for Entergy Arkansas, echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the value of creating intentional spaces where professionals can engage in honest, forward-thinking conversations. She noted that participation in AABE is not only an investment in individual growth, but also in building stronger organizations that deliver greater value to the communities they serve.

A key highlight of the conference was the CEO panel, featuring industry leaders including Drew Marsh. The discussion offered valuable insight into how energy companies are navigating increasing demand, advancing technologies, and rising customer expectations.

Marsh emphasized how dramatically the role of electricity has evolved. What was once considered a basic service is now essential to nearly every aspect of daily life. That shift places an even greater responsibility on utilities to deliver reliable, resilient, and affordable power while continuing to plan for long-term growth and system improvements.

He also spoke to the unprecedented pace of change driven by emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. As these tools rapidly reshape how work gets done, utilities must remain agile, adapting operations while maintaining a strong focus on safety, customers, and communities.

On another panel, John Hudson reinforced the importance of affordability, particularly in regions where many customers face economic challenges. He emphasized that success goes beyond maintaining low rates, it requires a continued focus on helping customers manage their energy costs through assistance programs, partnerships, and innovative solutions.

During a conversation with women in leadership, Kimberly Fontan and others shared insights and strategies for success for female leaders in a male-dominated sector undergoing momentous change and innovation.

A meaningful moment during the conference was seeing Marsh accept an appreciation award on behalf of Entergy as a major AABE sponsor. The recognition reflects Entergy’s ongoing commitment to investing in people, supporting professional development, and advancing a more inclusive and forward-thinking energy industry.

Experiences like AABE reinforce the value of connection, bringing together ideas, perspectives, and expertise that help move the industry forward. For Entergy, supporting opportunities like this is part of a broader commitment to building a stronger workforce, delivering better outcomes for customers, and helping shape the future of energy.

The conference provided not only insight, but also inspiration and a renewed appreciation for the role everyone plays in powering progress.
