Entergy New Orleans continues to advance our commitment to a stronger and more reliable electric grid. We work year-round to reinforce critical equipment and improve system reliability. A current key initiative is the installation of new security fences at substations throughout the city. These structures represent a leap forward in safeguarding our system and reducing preventable outages.

Entergy New Orleans was the first of Entergy’s five operating to commit to this upgraded level of security and reliability. The new fences establish a stronger physical barrier than traditional chain-link fences. They are built with reinforced materials that are cut resistant and designed with features that prevent climbing. These enhancements stop individuals who may try to vandalize or compromise the equipment that powers our communities.

“Our investment in the new substation fences helps protect the equipment that powers our neighborhoods and improves reliability for our customers,” said Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO at Entergy New Orleans. “The new design strengthens our system and helps reduce the kinds of incidents that can cause disruptions in daily life.”

The presence of these fences serves as both a visual and operational deterrent. They help discourage bad actors who may threaten the bulk electric system and place customers at risk. Unauthorized access has historically led to serious safety hazards, including the potential for injury or loss of life. It has also caused large and that impact homes, businesses, and essential services. The reinforced fence design supports safer operations and protects the grid from these costly disruptions.

Since 2023, we have installed eight upgraded fences with plans to install four more this year. Since installation, none of the sites upgraded have been breached or vandalized. In the same period, we have seen a significant decrease in wildlife inside protected substation yards. Wild felines, raccoons, and possums have not accessed areas where the new structures are in place. There have been no animal-related outages at the newly upgraded locations.

Entergy New Orleans remains focused on reliability, safety, and service. The new fences reflect our long-term commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and reducing outages. We will continue to take steps that strengthen the grid for the communities we serve.
