Entergy was recently announced as an Edison Electric Institute Emergency Response Award recipient for sending crews to assist in restoration efforts following hurricanes Helene and Milton. The storms struck the U.S. within two weeks of each other in the fall of 2024, causing extensive damage and mass fatalities across the Southeast.

“We are honored to receive our 51st award from EEI for our assistance efforts to other utilities following hurricanes Helene and Milton,” said Dakin DuBroc, Entergy’s vice president of incident response. “We understand firsthand what assistance from our neighboring utilities means during a restoration effort, and we’re committed to returning the favor when others in our industry are hit by such deadly storms.”

Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm at landfall, impacted the Big Bend region of Florida and was the deadliest hurricane to strike the contiguous U.S. since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The storm brought catastrophic inland flooding, extreme winds, deadly storm surge and numerous tornadoes that devastated portions of the southeastern U.S. and southern Appalachians. Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Milton made landfall on the west coast of Florida as a Category 3 storm, causing major damage in the Sarasota and Tampa Bay areas.

In response to these back-to-back disasters, we deployed 1,050 restoration workers to assist with Hurricane Helene restoration efforts. Following Hurricane Milton, the company committed a total of 1,200 restoration workers to assist with restoration efforts in Florida for Duke Energy and Tampa Electric. Over 25 days, these crews worked more than 895,000 hours in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee in late-summer conditions of high heat and humidity amid wind-blown debris and flooded terrain.

“America’s electric companies and their dedicated workforces work tirelessly throughout the year to strengthen the energy grid and to restore power—and peace of mind—for American families and businesses after extreme weather events and natural disasters,” said EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney. “Entergy showcased true leadership when it stepped in to lend critical support to neighboring electric companies in their times of need—underscoring the importance of our industry’s mutual assistance network.”

Presented to EEI member companies, the EEI Emergency Response Awards recognize the recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following major service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process, and the awards are presented during EEI’s annual thought leadership forum.
