Entergy New Orleans supports organizations that are finding creative ways to manage energy, strengthen sustainability and make every dollar count. Crescent City Schools’ Harriet Tubman Charter is putting those principles into action through its participation in Entergy New Orleans’ Energy Smart programs.
Serving New Orleans students across its Blue Campus and Park Campus, Harriet Tubman Charter joined the Energy Smart Large Commercial Automated Demand Response (ADR) Program in December 2022. The program gave the school a way to manage energy use during periods of high demand while maintaining the flexibility needed to support the school’s unique schedule and student activities.
Harriet Tubman Charter operates two campuses, each of which faced distinct energy-related challenges. The Blue Campus includes a historic, 110-year-old building, requiring improvements that preserve its original architectural features. The Park Campus occupies a former church and required upgrades to support learning environments for students from pre-kindergarten through second grade. Even after making improvements such as installing LED lighting, the school saw additional opportunities to improve energy performance.
Since joining the program, Harriet Tubman Charter’s two campuses have received $15,970.07 in ADR incentives. These funds support not only energy management but also the school’s mission to educate and enrich its students.
“Every resource we save creates an opportunity for our students and allow us to invest more deeply in the people and classrooms that serve them,” said Mariyam Salley, principal of Harriet Tubman Charter. “ADR savings have allowed us to pour money back into our students.”
Harriet Tubman Charter’s commitment to energy efficiency extends beyond the ADR Program. Crescent City Schools has also received $51,730.98 in incentives through the Energy Smart energy efficiency program, with improvements across the two properties helping reduce energy waste and improve building performance.
The school has also brought energy efficiency into the student experience. Harriet Tubman Charter distributed 216 energy-savings kits to fifth- and eighth-grade students, helping students and their families become more aware of energy use in their homes.
The incentives have supported student-centered priorities including classroom instruction, extracurricular activities, field trips, student enrichment and school community programming.
Harriet Tubman Charter demonstrates how schools and other community-focused organizations can use energy management to benefit students and their communities. Through the Energy Smart program, the school is reducing energy waste and directing more resources toward education.
