For seven years, Matthew Vining has dedicated his career to keeping the lights on for Entergy Louisiana customers. This weekend, that dedication will take center stage as Vining is recognized as the Lineman of the Game during the New Orleans Saints’ preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The recognition is part of Entergy’s partnership with the New Orleans Saints, which provides an opportunity to spotlight lineworkers and the people who help power Louisiana communities every day.
As a lineworker with Entergy Louisiana’s Riverlake Network supporting Jefferson Parish, Vining has spent his entire seven-year career in the trade. He received his lineworker training at Fletcher Technical Community College, where he developed the skills needed for a job that demands both technical expertise and physical and mental resilience.
“I was drawn to linework because I wanted a hands-on career that was both physically and mentally challenging,” Vining said. “There is something deeply satisfying about looking at a complex grid of power lines and knowing you are the one keeping the lights on for thousands of homes and businesses.”
Vining’s connection to Entergy began before his own career. His mother, Cassie Vining, began her career at Entergy and remained with the company throughout her working life.
“My mom started at Entergy for her first and only job,” Vining said. “She loved how she was able to learn and grow inside the company.”
Today, Vining says some of the most rewarding aspects of his job are the camaraderie and problem-solving that come with working as part of a line crew. Whether responding to an outage or working in challenging weather conditions, lineworkers rely on one another to work safely and effectively.
“When you are out in the field, especially during tough weather conditions, you rely completely on your crew,” Vining said. “That shared hardship and teamwork builds bonds that last a lifetime.”
Martin Jackson, line superintendent for Entergy Louisiana, said Vining’s work ethic and commitment make him a valued member of the team.
“Matt is a hard worker who brings a strong team spirit to everything he does,” Jackson said. “He is dedicated to getting the job done and doing it the right way. He understands the importance of looking out for his brothers in the field, putting safety first and making sure we deliver for our customers. This recognition is well deserved.”
Outside of work, Vining enjoys spending time with his wife, Brittany, and their two children, Jaxon, 4, and Cassidy, 2. He enjoys the outdoors, loves traveling and making memories with his family and friends.
As he takes the field this weekend as Entergy Louisiana’s Lineman of the Game, Vining represents more than seven years of experience in the linework. He represents the dedication, teamwork and commitment to service demonstrated by lineworkers across our region every day.
