The women of Entergy Louisiana traded in their laptops for lumber and their meetings for measuring tapes during the 20th Annual Women Build in support of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge.

Printed across the team’s shirts was the perfect message for the occasion:

“As girls we played house; as women we build them.”

When the team arrived, the home was little more than a concrete slab and a collection of wall studs. By the end of the day, it was fully sheathed thanks to the determination, teamwork, and skill of the women who sawed, cut, hammered, and swept side by side. Every participant found a way to contribute, proving that when women come together with purpose, remarkable things happen.

Among the volunteers was the future homeowner, Ms. Shirley, who worked alongside the team to help build the walls of her soon-to-be home. Her presence reminded everyone of the true impact of the day’s efforts, transforming not just materials into a house, but effort and compassion into a home.

Ms. Shirley, a proud grandmother of two, first learned about Habitat for Humanity through a friend who had gone through the program. Inspired by the opportunity, she eagerly began her own journey toward homeownership.

Through Habitat’s homebuyer education and financial literacy courses, Ms. Shirley has gained new tools to prepare for long-term success as a homeowner. She’s also found encouragement in the volunteers and community partners who show up week after week to help make her dream a reality.

“I’m just so grateful,” she said. “It means so much to know there are people who want to help me achieve this.”

Since 2005, Baton Rouge’s Women Build has constructed 20 homes with qualified low-income women and their families. Notably, 95% of Habitat homes in the Greater Baton Rouge area are led by women homeowners, underscoring the importance of this effort in breaking the cycle of poverty through affordable homeownership.

For the women of Entergy Louisiana, the experience was a meaningful reminder of what it means to Power Life—not only by keeping the lights on, but by helping neighbors like Ms. Shirley build brighter futures.
