Record-breaking heat continues to impact our region, and temperatures are reaching levels not seen in decades. According to recent reports from the National Centers for Environmental Information, this past July marked the warmest month on record for the contiguous United States.
The sustained heat has also pushed electricity demand to new highs for our customers this July, where we saw the highest electricity usage ever for the summer season, reaching close to 24 gigawatts across our four-state service area — reflecting how widespread and persistent extreme hot weather has likely kept people indoors more than usual, increasing electricity usage in the home.
Heat advisories are currently in effect across our service area through this week and are expected to reach triple-digit temperatures. To help keep our customers safe and comfortable, Entergy has temporarily suspended disconnects and continues to monitor National Weather Service heat advisories. We encourage customers to continue making payments as scheduled or contact us to discuss payment arrangement options during this time.
Staying safe in extreme heat
Whether you are working outside, taking care of yard chores or simply spending time outdoors, heat safety is essential.
- Drink water frequently and stay hydrated.
- Take regular breaks in shaded or air‑conditioned areas.
- Schedule outdoor activities during morning or evening hours.
- Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as fatigue, dizziness, headache, nausea, or heavy sweating.
- Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms include confusion, fainting, seizures, or hot, dry skin. Move the person to a cool place and seek immediate medical help.
Simple ways to save energy
Cooling your home can account for a significant portion of your electric bill during the summer. A few low- or no-cost changes can help:
- Set your thermostat to the highest temperature that’s comfortable.
- Change or clean your air-conditioning filter regularly.
- Use ceiling or portable fans to circulate cool air, and turn fans off when rooms are unoccupied.
- Close blinds, shades and curtains during the hottest parts of the day.
- Seal gaps around doors, windows and ductwork to keep cool air inside.
- Use the myAdvisor tools through your myEntergy account to monitor your energy use and identify opportunities to save.
