Before starting any digging project, remember to call 811 so underground utility lines can be identified and marked.

It’s important for homeowners and contractors to call 811 before digging to avoid the risk of hitting an underground utility line. Striking even one line can cause serious injury, service outages, fines and costly repairs.

When you contact 811, you’re connected to your local one call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of your intent to dig. Utility professionals will then visit the site to mark the location of underground lines — including natural gas pipelines, electric power lines and other services — with flags, spray paint or both.

Every digging project, no matter the size, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. Underground utility line depths vary, and multiple lines may be in the same area. Installing a mailbox, building a deck, putting up a fence, planting a tree or laying a patio? Don’t make a judgment call — make a phone call.

Locating underground utilities is just as important as keeping a safe distance from overhead power lines. Whether you’re a homeowner, business owner or contractor, don’t assume the area is clear. Call 811 before you dig.
